Happy Birthday February 20th, 2017 – Posted in: Bhutan, Uncategorized
Today, February 21st, 2017, the reigning monarch of Bhutan, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, celebrates his 37th birthday. This is a great and very important day for the whole kingdom.
Though Bhutan is a democracy with an elected parliament (constitutional monarchy), Bhutanese revere their king and the whole royal family. In order to celebrate the royal birthday appropriately, the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of February were declared to be public holiday. For this event many streets and buildings were nicely decorated and feasts were prepared. Even the schoolkids of Bhutan have been looking forward to this day and have prepared themselves thoroughly. In many schools dances are performed on the 21st. On the two following days they go to the public celebrations with their parents.
Just a few days ago, on the 5th of February, the small “Dragon Prince”, Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, became one year old. He is the first and only child of King Jigme and his charming wife, Queen Jetsun Pema. This day was also celebrated in the Kingdom. On his birthday, thousands of volunteers planted more than 100,000 trees.
We would like to congratulate both jubilees and wish them all the best.
