Happy Losar and a Happy New Year February 26th, 2017 – Posted in: Bhutan, Uncategorized
On February 27th and 28th, 2017, Bhutan celebrates “Losar” – the Bhutanese New Year festival. Therefore, we wish all the best to our Bhutanese friends all over the world.
Losar is based on the Tibetan moon calendar and falls on new moon between the end of January and the beginning of March of our Gregorian calendar. Most Bhutanese spent the first holiday with their family and friends. On the second day, many of them enjoy their national sport, archery. In almost every place competitions are taking place. It is an event for the whole family. Besides the sport, people eat, sing and dance.
Losar is also the feast of offering. People go to temples to offer food and money. Throughout the whole first month of the Bhutanese year, they give up eating meat products and butchers are even closed.
2017 is the year of the rooster, one of twelve zodiac signs (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig). Each zodiac is assigned special characteristics. It is said that people born in the year of the rooster are hard-working, multi-talented and profound thinkers.
