Incense Sticks

The use of incense has a long tradition in Bhutan. The composition reaches back to old recipes. Incense sticks in the land of the thunder dragon are not only used for spiritual purposes, they are ascribed to have healing and cleansing power. In almost all monasteries the gentle smell of incense spreads a cosy atmosphere. But they are even used in private pujas or when family members become ill.

Flavoured incense in which chemicals are added are not used in Bhutan. The different scents come from various natural ingredients such as sandalwood and aromatic herbs. Furthermore, incense sticks produced in Bhutan have no wooden core. All ingredients are kneaded, rolled out, cut and finally dried mostly by hand. Therefore, the sticks are slightly different in length and weight.
