Masks

The original Bhutanese wooden masks in our shop have a long tradition. They are used in monasteries or on religious festivals, such as Tshechus, where mask dancers in wonderful costumes perform their mystical dances. Each mask has its own meaning, just as the dance in which they are used.

It is an impressive experience to visit such festivals.

To produce such a mask is a complex process. First wood of a native pine species with a suitable texture is dried for several months without the aid of technical equipment. Afterwards, the artisan starts to shape the rough form of the mask. Then he goes on with the precision work, carving skilfully the contours and ornaments, before he does the finishing. Finally, the masks are painted in several steps according to a given specification by painters.
